Seth Godin on Logos

Seth Godin recently gave his opinion on logos and spending money on logo design.

A great logo doesn't mean anything until the brand makes it worth something. That's why spending $800,000 for a logo is ridiculous.

I had to step back and think about his thoughts for a while. But then it hit me.

He's absolutely right.

What I think Seth is getting at is consumer recognition. What he doesn't mean is that you shouldn't have a logo. Those logos he mentions are instantly recognized because their brand and products have become the faces of their companies because their products and services are superior, not the other way around. What do you think would have happened if they didn't have a logo at all?
