How do I set up my email account using Apple Mail?

To set up your email account in Apple Mail, follow the below steps for each account you want to set up.

Note: These instructions use Mail 3.0 (available on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard) but the steps for Mail 2.0 (available on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger) are very similar.

  1. In Mail, go to File > Preferences (⌘-,).

  2. In the Preferences window, click Accounts:

  3. To add an account, click on the + at the bottom left:

  4. In the new window, enter your full name, email address and password. (Your email should already be set up in your hosting account control panel). Then click Continue.

  5. Next, select the account type. POP and IMAP are both supported by our servers. (For more on the difference between these types, see this knowledge base article.)

Also enter a Description for the account (to help you identify it in Mail).

  6. For the Incoming Mail Server, enter mail.yourdomain.com
(Be sure to change "yourdomain.com" to your actual domain.)

  7. For User Name, enter your FULL email address (e.g., jane @ janedoe.com).

  8. Enter your password in the Password field, then click Continue.

  9. In the next screen, enter a description for the Outgoing Mail Server (this can be anything you want). The Outgoing Mail Server address is the same as the incoming mail server, mail.yourdomain.com (be sure to change yourdomain.com to your actual domain).

  10. Check the Use Authentication checkbox. For the User Name, enter your FULL email address, then enter your password in the Password box. Click Continue.

  11. In the next screen, click Create. You should then see your account in the Accounts section of Mail's Preferences.
